Most scams don’t work because the person on the other end is especially convincing. They work because they convince you that you don’t have time to think.
You get a phone call saying there’s a warrant for your arrest. A message says your bank account has been compromised. Someone claims a family member is in trouble and needs money immediately. Maybe the caller says they are with the IRS, the sheriff’s office, a utility company, or a business you recognize.
The story varies, but the pressure usually doesn’t. A scammer may create a deadline, tell you that officers are already on the way, threaten to close an account, or insist that something has to be handled within the next hour. The point is to keep you reacting to the deadline instead of checking the story.
The instructions can tell you as much as the story does. Someone claiming to represent a legitimate organization may ask you to pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, or another payment method that should get your attention. They may tell you not to hang up, not to call your bank, not to contact the police, or not to tell a family member what is happening.

The stories and ideas I don’t want you to miss.
Once somebody is trying to control who you talk to, how you verify the story, how you pay, and how quickly you make the decision, I’m less interested in how official they sound.
I’d rather see somebody stop the conversation.
Hang up. Look up the official number yourself and call it. Call your bank directly. Call the agency the person claims to represent. Ask somebody you trust to listen to what happened. Don’t use the phone number, link, or contact information the caller gave you to prove the caller is legitimate. That only lets the same person control the verification too.
Urgency by itself doesn’t prove something is a scam. Real emergencies happen, and legitimate organizations sometimes need people to act quickly. The difference is that a legitimate problem should still exist after you independently check it.
If the person on the other end needs you to act immediately, stay isolated, use an unusual payment method, and avoid checking the story with anyone else, stop letting them control the clock. Take the few minutes they’re trying so hard to keep you from taking.
