You’re making good money. You work hard on your own personal development. You’ve set goals, made a challenge here and there… and reached them – and not without busting your ass along the way, either. You’re doing well and you’re proud of yourself.
Life is good, right?
Well, sure it is. But it’s when life gets this good that you have a new and particularly strange threat that you might not have considered before: the threat of complacency.
Here are 3 signs that you might need a challenge:
1. You’re not pushing yourself anymore
Take a look at your daily routine. Ask yourself when the last time was that you really pushed yourself to go a little above and beyond. When did you last take on something a little more than what you’re used to?
If it’s been a while, there’s a possibility you’re operating well below your potential. Look out for subtle signs that you’re always setting yourself tasks that are just too easy. It takes a lot of character to risk failure when you have some easy gains on the table with something you’re already familiar with. However, stagnating is a heavy price to pay.
2. You’re the smartest person in the room
Also known as “big fish in a little pond” syndrome, being the best in your group is great… but only in some ways. If you’ve reached the top, you might like to ask if there are other hills to climb, rather than set up a couch and snacks on the hill you’re already on.
While being a mentor is great, you don’t get to learn much yourself if you never seek out those who are bigger, better, or stronger than you. Again, this discomfort of learning outside your comfort zone is worth the gains you’ll make.
3. You’re bored
Boredom is like the flashing light on your life’s dashboard telling you that your motivation tank is running low. Goethe knew what he was talking about when he claimed that a man can stand anything except a succession of ordinary days.
If you’re bored, take it as a sign that you’re letting your talents and faculties go untested and unexercised. Time to up your game. If your current situation doesn’t challenge you, then find one that does.
There is a persistent but largely unspoken myth when it comes to self improvement of all kinds: that one day, you’ll be finished. That’s why a little success can be the most dangerous thing of all. Success gives you permission to stop striving, to stop doing more, and seeing just how far you can go.
